Join us for an afternoon of talks at Central Library as we investigate the history of infectious disease in Los Angeles and learn how medical science is keeping us one sneeze away from the next pandemic.
Hear from some great speakers as we take you on a journey into the world of viruses and vaccines. You’ll learn more about the history of infectious disease in LA, from the polio outbreak of the 1930s up to the present day, and hear how technology is helping us in the battle to keep one step ahead of future global outbreaks. About the Speakers
Dr Laurene Mascola MD, MPH, FAAP
Dr. Mascola was the Chief of the Acute Communicable Disease Control Program for the Los Angeles County (LAC) Department of Public Health for over 30 years (1982-2016). Her program focused on disease surveillance, investigation and control for more than 80 diseases and syndromes in an area of over 4,000 square miles with 10 million people.
James “Jim” Lewis
Jim Lewis is a survivor of polio who became paralyzed in 1948 when he contracted the disease as a child living in Burbank. He went onto become a champion for the eradication of polio across the world and has won numerous awards for his dedication and impact. He is a member of the Rotary Club D5240 and Rotary’s Polio Eradication Chair.
Dr Ravina Kullar PharmD, MPH, FIDSA
Dr. Ravina Kullar is an infectious diseases global expert and researcher, who has spent almost 15 years researching novel ways to optimize the treatment in patients with antibiotic-resistant infections. Ravina is a past TED speaker and was recently invited to be the keynote speaker at the 72nd World Health Assembly held at the WHO in Geneva.
